Sam wasn’t expecting a call at 2 am, but his phone rang anyways. He groggily answered, expecting it to be another late-night prank call from one of his friends. Instead, a frantic voice on the other end of the line exclaimed, “There’s a giant chicken in my backyard!”

Sam rubbed his eyes, wondering if he was still dreaming. “I’m sorry, a what?”

“A giant chicken! It’s pecking at my lawn furniture and scaring my dog!”

Sam sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to get any sleep tonight. He grabbed his coat and headed out to the scene of the crime.

Sure enough, when he arrived at the house, there was a massive chicken standing in the backyard. It was easily six feet tall, with feathers the color of a sunset and a beady eye that seemed to follow Sam’s every move.

Sam approached cautiously, not sure how to handle this bizarre situation. “So, uh, how did this chicken get here?” he asked the homeowner.

“I have no idea! I woke up to it clucking outside my window!”

Sam scratched his head, wondering what kind of clueless criminal would leave a giant chicken behind at a crime scene. He snapped a few photos for evidence and tried to shoo the bird away, but it refused to budge.

As he was pondering his next move, a strange man approached him. He was wearing a top hat and carrying a cane, and he had a mischievous grin on his face.

“Ah, I see you’ve met my latest creation,” the man said. “I call her Henrietta.”

Sam raised an eyebrow, trying to figure out who this guy was and how he was involved in the giant chicken situation. “Your creation? What are you talking about?”

The man chuckled. “I’m a mad scientist, you see. I’ve been experimenting with genetic engineering, trying to create the ultimate farm animal. Henrietta is the first successful result.”

Sam was dumbfounded. He had heard of some pretty strange cases in his time as a detective, but this one took the cake. “So what are you going to do with her now?”

The man stroked his chin thoughtfully. “I suppose I could sell her to a traveling circus, or enter her in a freak show competition. Or maybe I’ll keep her as a pet.”

Sam shook his head, feeling like he was in the middle of a surreal dream. “I’m afraid I can’t let you do that. Keeping a genetically engineered animal as a pet is highly illegal.”

The man sighed, knowing he was defeated. “Very well, you can take her into custody. But I warn you, she’s not going to be happy about it.”

Sure enough, as soon as Sam tried to put Henrietta in his squad car, she started clucking and flapping her wings, causing chaos in the neighborhood. It took several officers to subdue her and take her to the animal control center.

As Sam was filling out paperwork, he couldn’t help but shake his head at the absurdity of it all. “I never thought I’d be investigating a giant chicken,” he muttered to himself.

But just as he was about to leave, a thought occurred to him. “Wait a minute, if Henrietta is the first successful result of this mad scientist’s experiments, what else has he created?”

The mystery deepened, and Sam knew that he had a new case on his hands. But for now, he decided to take a well-deserved break and head to the nearest diner for some chicken and waffles. He had to admit, it tasted even better than usual with the knowledge that he had saved the city from a giant, genetically engineered bird.
